This Month’s Prompt – Is Modern Art A Sham?

The image features Agnes Gund, a prominent art collector and philanthropist, posing in her New York apartment with a Rothko behind her of course.

“The phrase, “I could do that” has become more popular in the art world than anything – and we don’t exactly think it’s in reference to any renaissance piece but rather an attack on the “modern” piece. Think Rothko or Ellsworth Kelly. Works that may involve plain color or basic shape, nothing of religious importance or some sort of psychological or social reckoning – at least that’s what some think. What do you think of this type of art, do you accept it, and do you think it has equal standing in an auction to other paintings sold for millions, or do you find it pointless, an intricate scam that fools the bourgeois art snobs and is simply a waste of good paper. Talk to us, art for arts sake, the importance of technique and tradition, the involvement of class and wealth – is modern art a sham?

This month, we’re talking about art — and we want to hear from you.
